About the Artist
SURCARI (a combination of two words: “Suramérica” and “Caribbean”) is a performance group originally from Chile and Puerto Rico under the musical direction of guitarist Lorena Garay. The versatile members of Surcari perform a blend of traditional and original Latin American music on a wide variety of native instruments. Their colorful performances engage audiences of all ages as they are introduced to irresistible instrumental and vocal music from different Spanish-speaking cultures. A multicultural experience not to be missed, Surcari’s musical presentations take audience participation to a new level of interaction!
Music with a Latin Beat (Grades K-12, 250 students) (3 Artists)
Learn interactive games and songs in Spanish, based on the musical styles and traditions of the Andes, the Spanish Caribbean, Central and South America, Spain and Mexico. Students will also play an extensive collection of authentic percussion instruments and dance as they explore different carnival traditions. Student volunteers will create a rainforest soundscape and play along with Surcari. Length: 45 minutes

South American & Spanish Caribbean Music Workshop
A hands-on program that explores the Indigenous, European and African cultures that shape the music of South America and the Spanish Caribbean. Participants learn how to play basic rhythm patterns on a wide variety of Latin American percussion instruments while learning about the music and folklore of different Spanish speaking cultures. Participants will also learn to sing in Spanish while keeping the beat. Percussion instruments will be provided. Length: 45 minutes.
