About the Artist
The New Haven Symphony Orchestra first rehearsed in 1894 and gave its inaugural concert in January 1895. It is the fourth-oldest symphony orchestra in America, celebrating its 120 anniversary season in 2013-2014. Since its inception, the NHSO has performed regularly in New Haven, most of that time in Yale’s historic Woolsey Hall. It has also toured throughout Connecticut and beyond (including performances at Carnegie Hall), has given numerous radio broadcasts, and made the world-premiere recording of the complete five-movement version of Mahler’s first symphony. In addition to presenting classical repertoire, the orchestra has a long tradition of performing pops concerts, family concerts, and Young People’s Concerts throughout the state.
Creating Musical Readers (Grades PK-2)
Music and literacy combine when a NHSO Teaching Artist reads children a storybook and brings the tale to life with live music. Children are given an introduction to one instrument of the orchestra, treated to a story with music, and given the opportunity for questions and discussion. Perfect for Pre K-2 in the classroom or daycare setting.
Choose from one of these exciting tales:
Mole Music (by David McPhail) with violin
Ben’s Trumpet (by Rachel Isadora) with trumpet
Ralph’s Secret Weapon (by Steven Kellogg) with bassoon
Manuelo, the Playing Mantis (by Don Freeman) with cello
Back to Back Workshops- same book (45 minutes each, one musician): $330
Three Workshops same book (30 minutes each, one musician): $330
Musician Coaching Sessions (Grades 6-12)
NHSO Teaching Artists are ready to come to your school. Focus on technique, musicianship skills, practicing strategies, special repertoire, and any other skills or questions that you have. Teachers and students tell us what areas of musicianship we can support and the world-class musicians of the NHSO craft a coaching session just for you. The best part is that we have all of the instruments of the orchestra.
Coaching (90 minutes, one musician): $255
