About the Artist
Craig Norton has 15 years of experience as a percussionist and drum circle facilitator. He has conducted workshops and residencies at many schools, libraries, museums and community centers throughout Connecticut. His multicultural approach to music is engaging for students of all ages and abilities and is an engaging interactive experience for families.
Exploring Music & Math Through Music (Grades K-2) 50 students
“Music and Math” begins with the essential question: How are music and math connected? With a number of age appropriate rhythm games, multicultural songs and visual aids, students will explore common core math standards such as counting in sequences, geometry, patterns, fractions, addition and subtraction. This engaging program gives students experience using math skills in a practical, musical program in which everyone has a chance to participate with a rhythm instrument. Students will experience math and its practical applications in the real world as musicians all use counting to work together to make music.
Common Core Standards: Music Standards: Perform easy rhythmic and melodic patterns accurately and independently on rhythm instruments.
Kindergarten: Counting and cardinality; Operations and Algebraic thinking: Understand addition and subtraction; Geometry: Analyze, compare, create and compose shapes.
Grade 1: Solve problems involving addition and subtraction; Extend counting sequence; understand place value; Geometry: Reason with shapes
Grade 2: Solve problems involving addition and subtraction; Understand place value; Reason with shapes and attributes
All musical instruments and a PA sound system provided. School must provide markers, white board or chart paper.
